Happy Birthday

Today is our son's twelfth birthday.

Little did we know when he was born, just 15 months after his big sister, that he would be our only boy in a sea of girls. Before you feel sorry for him, trust me, he wears this honor well. He is the only one in the family who:

* Will never have to share a room (although he did with his older sister when they were preschoolers)
* Will never have to wear hand-me-downs
* Rarely has to share his toys/gadgets/tools

When he's not badgering me into making Hamburger Helper (which most of the family barely tolerates) or trying to prove his superior wrestling skills by taking me down, and when he's not hanging out with buds, he spends most of his time with music.

He taught himself how to whistle when he was two ("Is that your BABY whistling?" people would say to me), sang on key in spite of enormous tonsils as a preschooler, and took piano for a while. But since he took his first guitar lessons at age 10, he's found his passion. When I go in his room, I find scraps of paper jotted with lyrics, some with deep meaning ("I only want to follow You") and some with, well, not so deep ("I'm so bored, I'm so bored"). It's all good.

Here he is, tuning his new "baby." We had to have his family party last night, because tonight he is playing his guitar as part of his choir's holiday concert. Imagine 160 6th graders accompanied by four 12-year-old guitarists singing "Feliz Navidad." We are most certainly in for a treat!

He also received a beautiful leather-bound, engraved Bible from his grandparents. My dad wrote a special verse in it and presented it to him. This is a tradition started (or maybe carried on) by my mother's grandparents. When a child turns 12, they receive a special Bible from their grandparents. Our daughter got hers last year. I still have mine, and my mom still has hers, given by her grandparents when she turned twelve. Mine is falling apart now, but it is one of my most treasured possessions, representing the one thing my grandparents stood for.

I don't think our son quite understands the significance of his new, 50-pound Thompson chain reference Bible, but I pray that some day, he will. I pray he will not only appreciate the generations who served Christ before him, but that he will grow to love God's word and hide it in his heart.

Happy birthday, big guy. I love you!

Have you seen those Single Serving Hamburger Helper packets they have now? Maybe that will help. They come in a box of 8 or so. Not sure what flavors they have.

My little boy is 2 now and is the only boy out of our four, so I understand about the sea of girls and having only one boy. AND mine could whistle at 1 too. Happy Birthday to your baby boy!

Just wanted to say that I've just today found your blog and have spent the last 30 min. or so reading it. You have a lovely family...and your love for the Lord is evident in just this small amount of time I've read. Do you mind if I add you to my site so I can visit you often?
