Planning is overrated

Sometimes planning is overrated.

I mean, if someone told me to take the time to go through all my DVDs and videos and alphabetize them, I would have said, “Surely you jest. I don’t have time for that!”

But there I was, in the game room while my preschoolers played with some friends. I lost my entertainment center with the addition of our new TV (yes, it's still ugly), so all the movies had been - get this - in Walmart bags for weeks. I started clearing the bags out of the way so the kids could play.

Then it happened.

I had just emptied out these drawers of their resident junk and got an idea.

Who’da thought?

With the movies in a different room from the TV, the kids now go "check out" the movies from upstairs. I like not having every movie we own (quite a few, obviously, and why is it that so many of our covers are missing and/or destroyed? Sheesh. ) in my living room. The kids like being able to find movies without having to paw through stacks to find them. And since they couldn't ever get the stacks back to the way they were before they pawed, I like this better, too!

For the VHS movies with no covers (most dating back to when the big kids were preschoolers), I wrote the title on the "spine" of each video with silver sharpie so no pawing is required now.

There is one drawer for preschool movies - no need to alphabetize there. That way my little ones know where "their movies" are, without having to pull all the other ones out.

Total planning time: 0
Total elapsed time: 1 hour, including breaking up a few fights

I think I should try "not planning" more often!

Did you do your Works for Me Wednesday a couple of days early? :)
I love this idea! Plus, PLUS, my one-year-old will no longer be pulling every dvd we own out onto the floor for playtime. (What is the fun in that, I ask you? It's no fun for me, that's for sure!)
I'm glad it worked out for you to have time to do this - those are the best organizing "aha" moments for me - accidentally cramming it into the middle of doing other things.
Thanks for the tip - and the laughs!

Looks like you did a great job!

We've had some of the same problems w/covers. I like the silver sharpie idea, thanks.

GASP! the idea of writing the title on the actual spine of the video with a silver Sharpie is BEYOND BRILLIANT! None of our videos have cases, so I'm going to go straighten them out right now! Thanks for the inspiration!

This is great! All our videos are too easy for my two-year-old to access (she just dumped them all out of their cases onto the floor). I love the check-out idea. I am a new blogger, but I have been reading your blog for a few weeks. It is wonderful. Thanks!

I love when you can get things done like that and not think or plan about it. Great idea!!

I LOVE IT!! I have recently been thinking we have GOT to organize our MILLIONS (well, it seems like it) of videos also.

I also wanted to tell you I added you to my blogroll-I hope that is ok! I LOVE your blog!
