Comment Mystery solved

Certain unexplainable things annoy me. Like how that sock got in my bread cabinet, or why my garage door opener works some days and not others.

When it comes to computers, I'm easily annoyed. First of all, because I still can't fathom that data can transfer over wires (or crazier, VOICE over wires). Even more insane to me is voice OR data over AIR. It is, and will always be, a mystery to me.

So I'm amazed that I (of all the non-technical people in this world) may have finally solved the Comment Mystery.

For MONTHS, I couldn't figure out why it is that some people comment and I receive a notification email from this address: "noreply-comment(at)blogger.com."

Others comment and I receive an email DIRECTLY from their email?

Now, how handy is that? For those fortunate people, I can hit "reply" and say, "Your comment was way deeper than my post. Thank you."

I think I figured it out. It's because these people have THIS box checked on their profile. Here's the Blogger version. Other programs probably have something similar:

(Sorry I couldn't help showing off my new toy - SnagIt. I copied that profile screen above straight from my profile. Too fun. What else can I copy?)

ANYWAY, so while I do try to visit you as often as I can, I would really, really love to be able to reply to your gracious comments more expeditiously. Actually, I would just like to reply occasionally at all! Your comments and additional thoughts are what keep me going here, and I'd like to be better about letting you know that.

So if you could just CHECK THE BOX I would love you deeply! Create an email just for your blogging buddies if you are worried about spammers ruining your personal email inbox (I have had no problem with it in all my time blogging).

It will be okay, really. And I might even reply, sometimes.

The reason I don't have that checked is because my email address is part of my last name. I COULD get a new email address but then I'd have three of them... I always feel bad, though.

Hmm. that's always bugged me too. I went and checked the box. Does it show up for you now?

I have been wondering about this. I think people can reply to me, but didn't understand why I couldn't reply to others. Thanks for the explanation!

Brilliant! I've wondered this myself and would love it if more commenters did this. It is so much easier to respond if their email address comes up. I'm going to link to your post if that is okay.
You are so smart!

I agree, I agree! I love the emails, because yes, I am much more likely to respond this way. And like Laura, I think I'm going to link here (probably tomorrow, because well I've already posted twice today and that's quite enough).

I still wonder-- regularly!-- at voices and info coming over wires and air. My understanding really hasn't progressed all that much past childhood, when I wondered how they shrunk people and put them in the radio to sing!

Well I knew this but didn't think to post on it even though I wished people would do it. How smart and on top of you are! I think I might link to this post.

Now I'll be waiting for your reply! :v)

Mine is checked, and the reason I know is cause you wrote me on it! :)
I tried to write someone back the other day, too, and finally figured out that they didn't have that box checked!
Thanks for letting your readers know!

Great. I don't know if I have done that...I'll check after this...

also, an idea for Beck or anyone who has multiple email address's. I use Outlook Express for my main "real" email address, when I created an email address for "online" correspondence I set it up where it comes to the same inbox. So no matter which email address someone sends my mail to it comes to the same box. Makes checking email much easier.

I also have a tip here for keeping your online contacts saved in your address book so you know who they are and that you met them online.
You can see it here.

Hope this helps. Sorry Katherine I strayed off your subject a tad.

Well that explains it! My box is checked, but I wasn't sure why I couldn't reply to some of my comments. Thanks!

As far as the email issues go...I started a new email address when I started my blog. It matches (and I like matching!) My blog is Bringing Good Home and my email is bringinggoodhome @ gmail.com. I use that address for all my blogs. (Yeah, that was plural.)I did this for three reasons. One is that is matches. Two is that I was worried about increased spam, etc. And three is that I didn't want to put my personal email address up, even though is doesn't include my name or anything.

Well, I haven't had any trouble with spam. Not at all. And it isn't any trouble to check it. Since I have 3 blogs, I set them all to notify me of comments to that email and it's very easy just to log into that one email address and check for comments on all three blogs at once. My daily blog feeds go to that email address and any direct email responses as well. Everything is in one place. Like I said, very easy.

Have a good day! The weekend is almost here!

I've wondered about this too. I'm off to go check my own settings.

Please sharing this on Shannon's Works-For-Me-Wednesday, next week, so that others are aware of it too! :)

Okay, I just went and changed my setting. :)

Thanks for explaining this. MIne is checked but I find it frustrating when I can't respond to commentors via email. Oh and I have Snag-it at work and love it too!

Here's an idea: I have a separate e-mail address for my blog (for anonymity) but it gives me the option to forward a copy of any messages to my normal e-mail address. (I use gmail.com for the blog e-mail. Not every e-mail provider gives that option.)

That way, I don't give out my real e-mail address on my blog, but I don't have to check two addresses because I always get a copy in my normal e-mail. It has worked out great for me.

Thanks for sharing this idea with us. I had no idea that this was the cause. I checked the box.

Praise the Lord somebody figured this out. Now, you know I had to comment just to see if it worked...here's hoping.
