That's what friends are for

On Saturday my friend Cheryl rescued me. She was actually the last in a long series of rescuer-friends last week.

I had called Cheryl Friday to see if she could give me some ideas for where to hang my pictures. She has the Gift of Knickknack Presentation, a gift I am sorely lacking. When she came by, I was off trying to buy sofa pillows for cheap at Sams Club (where else?).

She was met at the door by my haggardly husband Dennis. He was knee deep in paint, touching up woodwork while trying to work through a punch list of items to be finished before we could have our open house Sunday. Allie (14) was pulling out the blender to slop make smoothies, Neal (13) was playing his electric guitar at full volume, and the younger kids were accompanied by multiple neighbor kids...an accident waiting to happen on the trampoline.

Meanwhile, the house was still filled with boxes (and boxes) of miscellany pulled from our as-yet unfinished bathroom sinks and bathroom tile. No pictures had been hung, boxes of plates and glassware from two other friends lay open in the living room, and styrofoam peanuts littered the floor.

Cheryl said Dennis handled the chaos with remarkable patience, even when Ruthie (4) spilled Fruity Pebbles all over the kitchen floor (DO NOT ASK why the Fruity Pebbles were out on a Saturday afternoon).

Cheryl smiled politely but told me later her first panicked thought was, Oh my gracious! These crazy people will never make it!

So she went home and devised a plan. She kidnapped our children, fed them something more nutritious than Fruity Pebbles, and kept them overnight. Then, her husband took over the kids (after he brought us Starbucks), and Cheryl came over with a truckload of plants, prints, vases, urns and candles. She went room by room with me until way past midnight, arranging, rearranging, hanging pictures and turning my austere into ambience. (Did I mention Cheryl also has the Gift of Pulling It All Together?). She came back the next day and helped do more of the same, plus she helped us clean.

By 3:00 we were ready, and we hear we had about seven families at our open house. We are on the market! We couldn't have done it without her.

You can compare pics with this post to see the "before" pictures.

Here's the entry. I found the table at Ross.
Formals (arranged by my other decorator-friend Staci):
Family room. The china is from my friend Carol, who has the Gift of Finding Unusual Stuff. I accidentally packed mine in the POD....The kitchen (finally, glass in the cabinets!):

Master (flowers, iron, and vases from Carol). Love that view of the trampoline...
Master bath:More pics of the rest of the house tomorrow. I'm exhausted but also very excited. It was SO worth it! Thank you, Cheryl, Staci, and Carol, for all your help!

Now for a buyer!

Oh my goodness that sounds so exhausting. It all looks beautiful and inviting though so I pray you sell quickly.
Don't you love having girlfriends? Who else would do all that and have fun with you doing it. She and her husband both sound like truly wonderful people.

Wonderful!
Now send her to my house - I was born missing the decorating gene.
Also, "haggardly" is a great word.

Everything looks so great, Katherine. It will all be worth it, but I would find it hard to leave after putting in all that hard work. Plus, it all looks so beautiful!

Congratulations! Things are looking great. Did you feel like you were on one of those TLC shows (Trading Spaces, While You Were Out), where they're working against the clock and placing that final acessory just at the buzzer? =)

Katherine,

Wow! Your house looks fantastic! Does it even feel like home anymore though? I wish I could've been one of the rescuer friends.

Love,
Sherri

Looks great! I hope it sells quickly for you.

I first felt a bit jealous about your wonderful friends but then I actually felt more conviction to ask myself if I am that kind of person to my own friends. My answer didn't please me so I'm going to be working on that!

Your house looks incredible! Great job! Wish I could have helped you, but your friends did a fantastic job...it must feel good to be "done" (well, when you get your stove fixed....) I'll be over for quesadillas.

I loved it, and I loved how your bowl sinks are further down into the counter. Ours have more of the bowl showing, and honestly I don't like that very well...it sits kind of high up and to wash my hands it is a bit awkward!

What wonderful friends you have!!!!
