Blog friends and blog preferences, AGAIN, fwiw

I have some hope that life will settle into a crazy/insane routine in the next few weeks, which means I am hoping I can get "out" a little more. I mean out "blog visiting."

I so appreciate those of you who come here faithfully! I like to think of it as leaving my back door open, and you are always welcome to come in and (as we say here in Texas) "set a spell." I'll be putting some chocolate chip cookies in the oven in a minute, and we'll chat over a cup of tea or coffee. It means the world to me that you would take a moment from your busy lives to share a moment with me!

I wish I could get out more on a regular basis, but that's just not realistic for me. However, there are some things that can help us get to one another better! I've blogged about this before, but I thought I'd reiterate here:

1. Add your blog name to your Blogger profile name. It's so simple. Just add a comma to your name (Katherine, Raising Five) or an "at" sign (Katherine@RaisingFive). Or use your blog name for your profile name. I personally prefer it when people use both, because then I can get to know you AND your blog name. Think of it as your bloggy last name. There are many bloggers with the same first names, so this helps me know which Jen, Lisa, Jennifer, or Janet is leaving a comment.

2. Check the "show my email" box on your Blogger profile. This allows me to reply to your comment by email. Set up a special email just for blogging so you don't compromise your family's name or clog up your personal email with bloggy business. It's easy, even for a non-techie like me. I can't always reply, but it puts us one step closer to each other.

3. Remind me again of your children's ages. You never know who is visiting for the first time, so when you blog (or comment), I like it when you mention your child's age at least once in EVERY post. Just a personal thing.

4. Email me. I can't always reply right away, but I love PICTURES (especially from those of you who do not have blogs), and little personal notes from those of you joining me on this journey make my day!

My parents are here this week, so I may be a little scarce. My mom and I are heading out after lunch to check out the shopping here in Small Town. We have a couple of cute little shops, which should take us all of an hour to browse. Then we'll go to the drug store for a fountain drink (Ruthie-4 will probably beg for a $1 milkshake. I'm not kidding. I love this town.).

Do you have any "blog preferences" I can add to this list?

I never thought of the one about putting your blog name with your display name. Nice tip!

Maybe I hadn't paid attention before because I didn't have a blogger blog. Heh.

Trying out the "bloggy last name" for awhile.

Thanks for all the great tips. I am a regular reader, though not a frequent commenter. Do love your blog though and reading about your big beautiful family! Thanks for letting me follow along!

I hate word verification. I don't hold it against people but I wish that those who've not had a spammer problem would take it off and turn on comment moderation. Its totally a preference.

Thanks so much for the tips. I am still pretty new at this, and don't comment as much as I should, or would like to, but I am trying to be better.

I did change my name though.

Thanks!

HI! I am sort of new to your blog, I have enjoyed it so much and can relate in many ways to your life. I do not have a blog at this time, although I am thinking about it! I have 5 children:
Justin- 18
Ashlyn- 15
Lauren- 8 (on the 8th of this month)
Dylan- 6
Ryan- 5 (on the 23rd of this month)
And wow can I relate your hectic, crazy schedule. I am ALWAYS driving someone somewhere :)

Still checking in on you, though I haven't been a good commenter over the summer. Getting back into my blogging routine now that the boys are back in school. So glad to hear that you guys are getting settled in at the new place.

Do you have some "after" photos from Rachel Anne's visit?

Good idea about showing children's ages. Do you mean in our comments or would that be a suggestion for our blog posts as well?
Thanks!

Julie @ 3Cookie day and the others - I mean in blog posts, mostly. It is nice in comments, too, but hey, let's keep it simple. Some of you have so many kids, you'd be typing all day just to leave a comment!!

I think the point is, comments and posts are not just for me to read and enjoy, but for ALL of us! So even though *I* may know you, there might be someone else reading who might not, so let's clue them in.

That is the beauty of blogging. We are sharing in this, and the more we understand a bit more about *who* is writing those deep (funny/serious) thoughts, the more we can appreciate them.

I have found many blog friends because I thought what they had to say in a comment (on someone else's blog) was interesting/hilarious/ thought-provoking. It does not hurt my feelings if you use my blog as a meeting place, then go off and have coffee with someone else because you discovered a soul-mate by reading their comment. Hey, my kids ditch me all the time. But I still know they love me =)

This is a great post, I may have to share these "rules" on my blog.

Katherine -

I love visiting both you and your sister's blog. :) It's always wonderful to read the thoughts of you who have "gone before" (coming from one who is "in the midst". :)

I know I don't comment too often. I admit it, I lurk. But generally it's because I get distracted by a certain male 3 year old who is into something or other and needs to be found, moved, redirected...sigh.

Hope you have a great time with your family.

Still here...always here! LOVE your recent parenting posts on the cell phone use and the time it took to pay attention.

Rock on!

My other tip: Use a FULL RSS feed. It allows me to keep up even when I can't go directly to the sites. The FULL feed is so much easier.

So thanks - for the full feed!
