I just wanted to tell you how much I love you. I know you didn't ask to be born fifth in a big family, but other than sometimes saying, "Why am I always last?" you never complain. That's a pretty awesome thing for being just four years old.
I love how you were so happy for the other kids on their first day of school, as if it were your own first day of school. You got yourself ready, and even helped them get ready. You smiled in their pictures, and were so cheerful.
Sometimes those games get long, but you are a good cheerleader, and when you lose interest in the game, you always find ways to entertain yourself.
Thank you for coming with Allie-15 and me yesterday to get her driver's permit. I had fun drawing turtles, dogs and cats with you on your magnadoodle in that yucky waiting area. And thank you for putting on your own seatbelt when Allie drove part of the way home. That will be even more important from now on, I can tell you that much!
I love you.
Love,
Mom

And now, just so I don't forget them, some Ruthie-isms:
Ruthie is still learning to like some foods, and since she's four years old, I put four grapes, four peas, four green beans, etc. on her plate. She can have more, but she's expected to try to eat at least those. When she's five she'll get five. Last week we sat down to lunch of sandwiches and grapes. Ruthie had four grapes on her plate, and I had a whole bunch on mine. She looked at my grapes, then at me, wide-eyed, and said incredulously, "THAT'S how old you are???"
Oh, baby, my plate's not big enough for that many grapes.

The other day the kids were outside and our dog Cowboy relieved himself on a peach tree in the back yard. Ruthie immediately said, "Hey, now it's a 'Pee tree!'"

Look at those EYES! Watch out Mama, she's gonna break some hearts!
...and I can't believe how much she looks like you. Love it!
What a gorgeous top picture! I love her sense of humor. "Pee tree". That is clever!
What an awesome post...you are such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing yourself and your family with us! I don't leave many comments, but I read (and love) your posts everyday.
Thank you!
What a great picture of her..you should totally frame this...I love it.
What a sweetheart! Thank you for sharing this.
We want a big family, and I always wonder how these kids are going to feel being part of one. Am I going to be able to catch their nuances? Are they going to each feel valued?
You definitely have assured me that it can be done. :)
Oh my. I laughed hard at the grapes comment. Ruthie is a beautiful girl!
That is the sweetest thing I have read today..... :)
What a darling.
Enjoy your year with her, Katherine.
Wow - she's beautiful! Look at those eyes. What a great tribute to little "Ruthie".
Ahh, this is so sweet! I hope she gets a chance to read this when she gets older. I'm sure she will appreciate having had this time with you just as much as you do!
She has goreous eyes by the way :)
So sweet and lovely...Ruthie is definitely a blessing! This is a great article and a great post - definitely very helpful to women who are sharing the same sentiments.

Just today, I caught the potty-training 3 year old peeing on a tree. When I said, "what are you doing?", he said, "it's the peeing tree." Apparently, he's been talking to Ruthie!!
She is TOO cute. What do you say in about 16 years we introduce her to Jamie???
Ohh thank you Kahterine...I have a four yrs old as well, and she is so sweet as well..THANK YOU for this post....the thing is today our baby boy is two....so I still have a lot to manage.
Ok, hold on, let me grab my kleenex first...... ah better ok, now I can see through the tears to post this comment!!
How beautiful. I needed to hear that because the fifth child does have to try and find his/her way in that big crowd called a family! I sometimes overlook that, sometimes I wish he were like the big kids.
Thank you for opening my eyes to the fact that he won't be little forever and one day he will be just like the big kids and I won't have a little buddy to share my day with.
p.s
My 15 yr daughter just received her permit yesterday too! We have the same life I swear!
Many blessings,
Maureen
Such a sweet post! I love the age of 4 because they're a little bit grown up and a little bit baby all rolled into one.
I also have given given my kids things on their plates in the number of how old they are. Works well to get them to eat it!
Hi Katherine,
It's been awhile since I commented here, but I wanted you to know how sweet this post is! My own little four year old is home by himself all day, too, and I feel very similar about the way he just accepts his place in our family at the bottom of five. Not a word of complaint. :)
Your posts have kept me going, kept me laughing, and helped me try to be sane this summer as my family has been living in a travel trailer in a campground--we're talking 240 sq ft here--while we build a new home in a very small rural community. I feel like so many of the things you have talked about have paralleled what's on my mind, and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!

(Hope you remember me!)
Ruthie is a cutie, thanks for sharing this entry it was a special one! I read your blog often but don't comment much, I just wanted you to know how inspiring you are to me!
Oh my goodness! I took a long blog writing and reading break. I am finally trying to get caught back up and I am browsing through and see where you are eating. Oh goodness - I spent countless hours there when my kids were little. I loved that little town!! I hope you are loving it - I miss it sometimes!!
