But, we have foster kids, and I cannot legally use their names. So, my solution is to use substitute names. The substitute names start with the same letter as their real name, so it helps me keep them straight. We also have a more "professional" blog where I've been much more impersonal (oldest, middle boy, etc.).  We'll probably end up putting a link to our personal blog on our "professional" blog, so it probably won't matter in the end :)  I know it's personal preference, but I figure if someone REALLY wants to figure out who you and your family are, they can do it. But my girls know that just because someone knows their name or things about our family they can't trust them. Have you ever rented the Stranger Safety dvd from your library? It helps them understand this. And like the video suggests their are only 3 adults that are "safe adults" for them to go with if I couldn't pick them up from school or something. When we move to "the big city" (not anywhere near as big as yours), I'm planning to be more discreet but not sure what that will look like yet.  The middle name thing is a good idea, wouldn't work for me as neither of my boys have such a thing.  You've been careful not to use your last name or reveal your specific location so maybe first or middle names would work. I haven't used my nickname since my early twenties.  So now I get e-mails to my old nickname and I feel like a big fraud because no one in "real life" calls me that anymore.  And I slightly changed my husband's name and now people ask or comment about him using this slightly changed nickname and I just feel like "liar, liar, pants on fire!"&lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;So I'm considering just outing us all and using our real names.  Or maybe his initial?  It's irksome.  I call my son Nicknack, which is fine since that is what I call him in real life and I'm sure everyone can figure out what his real name is, anyway.&lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;I'm just worried that one day I might want to meet up with one of my blogging friends and then I'd have to explain all about our actual names. But until last year (when I came home to become a full-time mommy for my first baby) I was a public school middle- and then high-school teacher.  Those years made me very aware of how much time children/teens spend on the internet and how free they often are with their personal information.  I'm sure you are very careful with your children's internet access, etc. but I think the fact that many parents are not has probably only added to the numbers of people who, sadly, will seek to victimize children whose information they find on the internet.  I don't mean to sound like a fearmonger.  I believe God is sovereign and we should trust him--while using the wisdom and discernment he gives us.  All this to say, I have noticed, and been impressed by, your discretion in using code names for your children.
